Load Line Survey Flashcards

(13 cards)

1
Q

State the main purpose of the Load Line Survey

A
  • Ensure all equipment that unships water is in good condition
(Scuppers, Freeing Ports, Overboard Discharges, Drain Valaves)
  • Ensure the ship is not loaded deeper than is safe, gudied by laod lines.

+ That the ship has enough freeboard and reserve bouyancy to stay stable and seaworthy in all conditions

Q

Explain the importance of EACH of the following with refrence to the purpose of the Load Line Survey
Bilge System

A

1) Removes water entering the ship through leaks, and other means such as flooding.
2) Also prevents the accumulation of water in machinery spaces.
+ If the bilge system didnt do these things may occur which would affect the Load Line Survey, such as
- Increase Weight
- Reduce Freeboard
- Submerg Load line Marks
- Breach Load Line Regulations
- Affects Stability, Potentially causing List or trim
3) During the survey, Bilge Pumps, Valves & Alarms are checked to ensure they are efficient and reliable.

Q

Explain the importance of EACH of the following with refrence to the purpose of the Load Line Survey
Ballast System

A

1) Maintains correct traim and stability by shifting or adjusting water ballast.
2) Helps keep the ship upright and waithin the approved Loading Conditions (Load Lines).
+ During the survey, checks ensure
- Ballast Tanks
- Valves
- Pipelines
+ are in good condition and that the system can operate effecitvley when needed

Q

Describe the inspection required of a weather deck water-tight door to ensure compliance with load line survey

A

1) - Structure - Check door/frame for corrosion, cracks or distortion.
2) - Seals - Ensure gaskets are intact, clean and undamaged.
3) - Closing Gear - Operate dogs/handles for full, uniform compression.
4) - Hinges - Confirm free, smooth movement; lubricate if needed.
5) - Hose Test (Tightness) Verification - Witness or review records of a minimum 15 minute hose test at the required pressure (as per SOLAS/Load Line Rules).

+ Confirm ID plates, instructions legibale and survey records complete.

Q

with refenece to lubricating oil or fuel oil tanks that have ventilators on the main weather deck
Explain the purpose of the ventilation

A
  • Allows tanks to safely breathe when oil expands/contacts due to temperature changes.
  • Prevents prssure or vacum build-up, avoiding structural damage or leaks.

Q

with refenece to lubricating oil or fuel oil tanks that have ventilators on the main weather deck
Explain how ingress of sea water in bad weather is prevented

A
  • Vent heads are fitted with ball floats or weathertight cowl heads that seal when submerged.
  • Air pipes have goosenecks raised above deck prevent green seas entering.

Q

with refenece to lubricating oil or fuel oil tanks that have ventilators on the main weather deck
Explain how the risk of fire entering the ventilator is reduced

A
  • Vent heads fitted with flame screens (usually fine copper gauze)
  • These stop flames/sparks from igniting flammable vapours inside the tank.

Q

with refenece to lubricating oil or fuel oil tanks that have ventilators on the main weather deck
Explain how the risk of pollution is prevented

A
  • Goose neck or crowl prevents liquid oil from sloshing out in rough seas.
  • Ball float valves close if the tank overfills or ship heels, stopping oil escaping.
