long term memory Flashcards
(7 cards)
define long term memory.
memories that are taken from the STM to the LTM - these are longer lasting memories that last for months and years.
what are the key differences between LTM and STM?
duration - how long info is stored.
capacity - how much info can be stored.
encoding - how the info is retained or learnt e.g acoustically.
evaluating research of capacity of LTM.
- there are no studies that research the capacity of LTM, because there are endless amounts of info - capacity of LTM is unlimited.
explain the procedure of the duration of the LTM.
Bahrik - high school year book study:
- tested 400 people (aged 17-74) on the memory of their classmates)
- asked to identify them from a series of photos in a high school year book.
- or asked to free recall the names of students in their class.
state the results of this study.
photo recognition:
after 15 years - 90 percent accuracy.
after 48 years - 70 percent accuracy.
how does the LTM encode?
semantically
evaluation of encoding.
the LTM doesn’t exclusively use semantic - Frost found evidence of acoustic coding in the LTM.
