What does the medulla do?
Controls unconscious activities like breathing and heart rate.
What does the hypothalamus do?
Maintains body temperature and produces hormones that control the pituitary gland
What does the cerebrum do?
Controls memory,consciousness,language and intelligence
What does the cerebellum do?
Responsible for muscle coordination
What does the pituitary gland do?
Produces many important hormones ( some involved in menstrual cycle)
Why does the pituitary gland work with in the brain?
The hypothalamus
What is the role of the cornea?
Refracts light into the eye
What is the role of the iris?
Controls how much light enters the pupil ( the hole in the middle)
What is the role of the lens?
Refracts light as well as the cornea and focuses it into the retina
What is the retina?
The light sensitive part and its covered in receptors called rods and cones which detect light
What type of light are rods in the eye sensitive to?
Rods are more sensitive in dim light but cant sense colour
What type of light are cones in the eye sensitive to?
Cones are sensitive to different colours but are not so good in dim light
What is the role of the optic nerve?
Carries impulses from the retinas receptors to the brain.
What is adrenaline?
A hormone released by the body that prepares the body for ‘fight or flight’
What gland produces adrenaline?
The adrenal gland
How does the body control the levels of hormones in the body?
Negative feedback system
What is thyroxine and what produces it?
A hormone released by the thyroid gland and it regulates the metabolic rate of the body.
What is testosterone?
The main male sex hormone. It stimulates sperm production.
Where is testosterone produced?
The testes
What is oestrogen?
The main female sex hormone that is involved in the menstrual cycle and promotes female sexual characteristics
Where is oestrogen produced?
The ovaries
What is progesterone?
A hormone produced by the ovaries that helps to support pregnancy
