SCAMPER stands for
Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate, Reverse
Replace a part, material or process with something else
SUBSTITUTE
Join elements, ideas or functions together in new ways
COMBINE
Modify something to better suit a new purpose, person or context.
ADAPT
Enlarge, reduce. change the shape, or alter attributes. Can a small change have a big effect?
MODIFY
Rather than changing the thing itself, consider changing the context it exists in
PUT TO ANOTHER USE
Remove elements, simplity or pare down to essentials.
Is less more?
ELIMINATE
Flip the script, reorder your priorities. invert cause and effect and turn it all
upside-down.
REVERSE
is useful when creating events with specialized products and services targeting a specific market, function or industry.
VERTICAL
is applicable when you want to cover a wide variety of products, services and industries
HORIZONTAL
Objectives measure performance.
They also convert a corporate vision
into specific targets that are
quantifiable, measurable and
deadline-driven.
SMART
SMARTER stands for
Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Reasonable, Time-bound, Engaging, Rewarding
According to Thompson, Strickland and Gamble (2012), there are two main types of objectives,:
- STRATEGIC
- FINANCIAL
These objectives focus on improving “competitive vitality and future business position.
STRATEGIC
These are directed towards improving business performance.
FINANCIAL
an achievable outcome that is typically broad and long term
GOAL
Defines the specific, measurable actions you must take to achieve the overall goal
OBJECTIVE
There are basic differences between a goal and an objective.
- Goals are broad; objectives are narrow
- Goals are general intentions; objectives are precise
- Goals are intangible; objectives are tangible
- Goals are abstract; objectives are concrete
- Goals cannot be validated as is; objectives can be validated
