Q

AO1 Equity theory - Walster

Inputs/ outputs
Inequity = distress

A

What is fair to each partner is subjective - an equitable rel = one partners benefits - cost = other partners benefits - cost
If we perceive inequity we are motivated to fix

People strive to achieve fairness and feel distressed if they do not

Q

AO1 Social Exchange Theory - Thibault and Kelly

Profit and loss
Comparison level
CL for alternatives

A

P&L - all social beh is a series of exchanges - attempt to maximise reward and minimise cost
Rel assumes in exchange for resources eg time we will receive benefits eg care
Reward - cost = outcome / commitment dependent on profit

CL - product of past experiences and general views of we might expect / if potential exceeds CL it is worth pursuing

CL for Alt - potential increase in profit weighed up / cost of ending rel comp with benefits of new - if profit sig higher it will replace

Q

AO2 Social Exchange Theory

Rosbult and Martz / RWA
Rel counselling
Simpson et al
Hedonistic and reductionist

A

R&M - explains abusive rels - if investments high eg kids and alt option are low may still be considered profitable

Rel counselling - 5:1 pos to neg comments = successful rel, can help increase proportion of pos exchanges and minimise neg

Simpson et al - pps rate members of opp sex - those already in rel rated lower - doesn’t explain how great discrepancy between potential and actuality needs to be

Hedonistic - doesn’t consider social aspects eg communication - also only motivated to continue through selfishness - only applicable to individualist cultures
