Mission Statement
The mission of the Special Assignments Unit is to provide tactical support to Precincts and Bureaus by responding to unplanned tactical events, executing high-risk search warrants, apprehending dangerous criminals, and assisting with incidents requiring specialized expertise and equipment.
SAU Objectives
1) Provide timely response to tactical events for the Patrol Division
2) The successful management of various tactical situations including those involving hostage and.or barricaded suspects
3) The apprehension of high violence potential or high profile criminals
4) The successful management of incidents which require the expertise of the Special Assignments Unit:
a) High-risk search warrants
b) High Angle/Rescue operations
c) Incidents requiring the use of night vision devices and tools
d) Incidents requiring SCBA Response
e) Dignitary protection
Team Positions
0 - Point 1 - Point Cover 2 - Entry/Diversionary Device 3 - Less Lethal/Back-up Gas 4 - Breacher 5 - Sniper 6 - Sniper 7 - Utility 8 - Utility (Secondary Breacher) 9 - Utility
Minimum Staffing
Eight officers and 1 sergeant
Distraction Devices
Used whenever a diversion is necessary to enable an entry, arrest, or tactical plan to be effected
a) Barricaded suspect and/or hostage situations
b) High-risk search warrants
c) Distracting a subject to allow apprehension or deny access to an area
d) Other situations where the use of a distraction device may increase the safety of officers or the public
Breaching - Types
Manual Mechanical Ballistic Explosive Vehicle Initiated
Emblem - SAU colored red
