Maps and geological structure Flashcards
(9 cards)
Anticline
folded structure that arches upwards in the center (limbs dip away from axial plane)
Cordillera
extensive chain of mountains or mountain ranges. Form primarily in response to plate tectonics
Cross-Section
Hinge Line
line where the dipping limbs join
Monocline
fold like carpet draped over a stair step. These faults do not cut though to the surface
Plunging fold
when hinge line plunges downward into the ground (is not horizontal). A plunging fold has a hinge that is tilted
Reverse fault
hanging wall moves upward relative to footwall due to compressional forces, >30*
Ridge
Rule of V’s
principle used to interpret the direction of dip of rock layers on topographic map
Syncline
folded structure that arches downward in the center (limbs dip in towards axial plane)
Thrust Fault
type of reverse fault where plane has a very low angle typically <30*
