What is the first paragraph topic sentence and quotes?
Topic sentence:
From the outlet, the difficulties that inhabitants of Marrakech have to endure are clear as Orwell creates a shocking view of how the dead were treated by using a variety of word choice.

“dump the body in it and fling over…dried-up, lumpy earth.”

“derelict-building lot.”
What is the opening sentence and analysis of:
“dump the body in it and fling over…dried-up, lumpy earth.”
Opening Sentence:
Orwell firstly describes how the dead were physically treated by stating “quote”.
Analysis:
The word ‘dump’ has connotations of carelessly throwing something. This emphasises how clumsy the burial was, which indicates that the funeral of the dead was worthless to the people handling it. This reveals that the dead are being treated with zero respect, and there is an extreme amount of lack of honour towards them.
What is the opening sentence and analysis of:
“no gravestone, no name, no identifying mark of any kind.”
Opening Sentence:
Orwell continues to highlight the carelessness shown to the dead by stating “quote”
Analysis:
Here, the writer suggests how little care was put into this funeral. The repetition of ‘no’ emphasises the anonymity of the deceased and the lack of importance to society. This leaves us questioning how people can be so heartless towards one who is no longer alive. It is surprising how there is not a soul showing any remorse when identifying the bodies in such a way.
What is the opening sentence and analysis of:
“derelict building-lot”
Opening sentence:
Orwell then uses imagery to talk about the burial place by stating “quote”.
Analysis:
This simile suggests that the grave is ignored and left to waste. It is all abandoned and neglected, which indicates the lack of worth the burial ground has. This goes towards the fact that there is a loss of identity and an act of dehumanisation taking place. The dead are being treated as worthless creatures that are not honoured with a normal and respectful place where they can be buried. This saddens us as we read how the dead have had their identity snatched away from them so effortlessly. They have become unknown and no longer a priority.
What is the evaluation?
This leaves us taken aback at how the dead are being treated and how much of a lack of respect they are receiving. This causes us to feel sickened as it is disrespectful to handle unalive people like so. We are compelled to feel a profound sense of sorrow as it is not a common occurrence that would take place in modern-day society. n
