Q

What is the opening sentence and analysis of
“houses are completely windowless”

A

Opening sentence:
Orwell describes the strange state the houses are in “quote”

Analysis:
This symbolises the lack of hope as there is no light entering the houses, which makes everything appear dark. The discretion of ‘windowless’ highlights that the house has no exposure to natural light, which adds more to the impact of a lack of hope. This unsettles the reader as to how the Jews have to live.

Q

What is the opening sentence and analysis of
“little river of urine”

A

Opening Sentence:
Orwell is finished describing the indoors, he then moves on to describing the sickening outdoors by stating “quote”.

Analysis:
This emphasises how dirty the Quarters are. Having a disgusting trail of something that belongs in the sewers and can possibly carry diseases just makes us feel disturbed. This is an eye-opener to the reader and opens a gate of unsettling images playing through their head. It emphasises the filth all over.

Q

What is the opening sentence and analysis of
“sore-eyed children…like cloud of flies”

A

Opening sentence:
Orwell then continues by describing the children “quote”.

Analysis:
The effectiveness of calling the children ‘sore-eyed’ suggests that they were neglected. It is also effective, as the reader knows that the eyes can see the future and are a window to our soul, but the children cannot see that due to all the corruption and damage. The simile of ‘like cloud of flies’ indicates that the children are a small, filthy group that travels together. The children are being treated and viewed as insignificant pests. This upsets the reader, as these children probably have the potential for a bright future; however, it is ruined due to the place they live in.
