what is a trigger point
they are sensitive spots in the muscle located in a taut bands of muscle fibres. formed due to the sarcomere (part of the muscle where contraction occurs) becoming overactive and contracted. Developed at the motor end plate.
what are the aims of massage
to increase blood flow, lymphatic drainage(waste products) which can reduce swelling, reduce muscle tension, relieve pain, reduce DOMS
what are the massage contraindications
skin infection, open wounds, fracture, tumour

what are some techniques you can use to treat trigger points
cross fibre massage - applies massage strokes in the opposite direction to the muscle fibres
slow and sustained pressure - applying firm and direct pressure on the trigger point until a release is felt 30 - 60 seconds
