Nems Flashcards
(9 cards)
what is neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES)
causes muscle contraction through electrical stimulation
what are the benefits of nems
can improve muscle strength and endurance for individuals who cant perform a a high intensity, can decrease pain, can be used when immobile
what are some limitations of nems
increased muscle fatigue vs voluntary movement, less muscle activation than voluntary, could be painful for individual, expensive
what examples could nems be used for
Post acl surgery, hamstring strain rehab, ankle sprain recovery,
how does it work compared to a voluntary contraction
nems - pulse is delivered through electrode which causes muscle contraction
voluntary- muscles receive a pulse from CNS through the motor nerve cells which are connected with the muscle fibre
what are some factors that influence electrical stimulation
electrode placement, condition of muscle,
contraindications for nems
bleeding tissue, acute fracture, infection, skin condition, malignancy, epilepsy
considerations for nems
dont handle while electrodes are on, dont use on open wounds, dont apply to head, neck, chest could disrupt rhythm
what are the different modes used for
mode 1- 2 blood flow
mode 3-4 pain
mode 5-6 endurance
7-8 muscle conditioning
mode 9 - power/strength
