How are numerical and algebraic expressions different
Numerical expressions do not have (in)equality signs or variables. Algebraic expressions contain numbers, variables, and operations
Define Algorithm (in mathematics)
a step by step procedure that can be used to solve computations or other mathematical problems (think of it as a set of directions)
An algorithm is a ______ list of instructions
finite; it does not allow something to repeat infinitely
What is a unit rate
A unit rate is the measure of the amount of one unit it takes for something to happen in other units.
a rate where the denominator is one (i.e. 60 miles per 1 hour )
What is the simple interest rate formula?
Interest = Price * Rate* Time
Can a binomial have a negative exponent?
No
What is a binomial ?
binomial is an algebraic expression consisting of the sum or difference of two terms.
Example: 3x + 2
What is the domain and range of a linear function
Domain {-infinity, infinity}
Range {-infinity, infinity}
Which instructional strategies are most effective for promoting conceptual understanding in mathematics?
problem-based learning that encourages students to explore mathematical concepts through real-world problems
What is statistics?
A mathematical subject that collects organizes, analyzes and interprets data
What is the purpose of statistics?
to draw informed conclusion from a sample of fata that represents a population
what is a parameter in stats?
a value, numerical or otherwise measurable used to define a set of data and the relationship within the data
What are parametric models in stats
have probability distributions that have set parameters which are known
What are non parametric models?
have values in which the parameters can change and are not established from the beginning
What are semiparametric models
a blench of parametric and non parametric models, fixed and flexible
What are response variables
dependent variables, aka the result of the research
What are explanatory variables
specific types of independent variables which may not totally be unaffected by other variables
Although a variable may be considered to only affect others, this does not mean the variable does not have a side effect itself.
What is categorical data
the measure of a variable placed into groups
What are the two types of categorical data
Ordinal and Nominal data
What is Ordinal Data
placed into group based on a ranking system such as a rating or results from a race
What is nominal data
placed into groups without a ranking system, such as names of sports or genres of movies
What is discrete data
finite data that can be counted
what is continuous data
the measurement of data that has no bounds or limit
The _____ is a condition or piece of data in an experiment that is controlled or influenced by an outside factor, most often the independent variable.
Dependent Variable
