Media convergence Flashcards
(20 cards)
Media convergence
Refers to the way that a whole range of different kinds of information can be combined and delivered in one format (videos, texts and images can be stored on one website)
Media convergence (social media)
The way in which social media platforms are able to communicate with eachother to share contacts
What has media convergence led to?
Convergence of various cultural ideas as well as economic markets becoming increasingly global rather than just national
How have digital forms of communication been related to Marxism?
Digital forms of communications have been predominantly developed in the Western world, connected to the marxist theory that perpetuates capitalist ideas
What 3 levels do media convergence operate at?
Technological, Economic, Cultural
Who looked at technological convergence?
Boyle (2005)
Technological Convergence
Digitalisation has led to the merging of different types of information which can be merged into a single delivery system, whereby it can be delivered immediately.
Example of single delivery systems
Smart phone
Economic convergence
The fact that media, TV and telecommunication companies that once operated in separate spheres of development and production are engaging in technical and economical alliances to produce multi-media delivery systems
Why has economic convergence occurred?
Because digitalisation has rendered the borders between different forms of communication are irrelevant
cultural convergence
Most members of society interact with eachother using some type of digital communication. Old forms of communication now replaced by digital social media networks, cultural convergence also led to consumption patterns changing
Big data
Extremely large data sets that may be analysed digitally and non digitally to reveal patterns, trends and links, relating to human behaviour and interactions
In what terms is Big data big in?
The storage space it requires and the number of people talking about the data and the opportunities it might present
What does big data focus on?
The data trails or impressions we generate as we communicate, consume and conduct our daily life
What are the five features with differentiate big data from other types of information identified by Pountney?
Volume, Velocity, Variety, Variability and Complexity
Volume as a feature of big data identified by Pountney
The cost of keeping data has decreased therefore volume is no longer an issue in terms of cost
Velocity as a feature of big data identified by Pountney
Data is streaming at unprecedented speeds and must be dealt with promptly
Variety as a feature of big data identified by Pountney
Data comes in different types of format such as structured (numeric, databases) and unstructured (such as text documents, emails, videos)
Variability as a feature of big data identified by Pountney
Data flows can be inconsistent (Seasonal and event triggered peak data might be challenging to manage)
Complexity as a feature of big data identified by Pountney
The data can come from multiple sources and therefore could cause issues when trying to match, sort and transform the data across different systems
