Meiosis Flashcards
(15 cards)
Prophase 1
Supercoils. Chromosomes condense. Nuclear membrane dissolves. Homologous pairs form bivalents. Crossing over.
Metaphase 1
Spindle fibers attach to homologous chromosomes. They line up along equator.
Anaphase 1
Fibers contract and split pairs. Chromosomes move to the two poles.
Telophase 1
Chromosomes decondense. Nuclear membrane reforms. Cytokinesis.
Meiosis 2
Basically the same as the first, except it’s the chromosomes doing stuff not the homologous pairs.
Cancer
When cells lose control over cell division. Can occur in any tissue or organ.
Primary
Abnormal mass of cells at original site of development t.
Secondary
Metastasized. Tumors in secondary locations.
Benign
Do not spread, non cancerous, don’t impede functions.
Malignant
Does not resemble parent tissue. Spreads. Impairs function.
Mutagen
Outside agent that causes a mutation. Carcinogen- causes cancer.
Proto-oncogenes
Normal gene that codes for a protein that stimulates cell division.
Oncogene
Mutated proto-oncogene. May cause cancer. Over 40 know.
Anti-oncogenes
Tumor suppression gene. May fix damaged DNA. May destroy cells where DNA cannot be fixed. BRCA 1 and 2
Diploid haploid
2 of each chromosome pair vs. one.
