Memory: The multi-store model of memory (AO1) Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is a model?
A representation of how something works that allows predictions to be made about human behaviour.
Who proposed the MSM?
Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968).
Why is the MSM significant?
It was the first model of memory and was very influential in inspiring research.
Give an overview of the MSM.
The MSM is a linear, sequential model of memory which is composed of three separate and distinct stores - sensory register, STM, and LTM. Each store differs in coding, capacity, and duration. Information passes from store to store if certain conditions are met, and can be lost in each memory store.
How does information pass from the sensory register to STM?
If attention is focused on the information.
What are the three sensory stores that make up the sensory register?
- Iconic store (visual encoding).
- Echoic store (acoustic encoding).
- Haptic store (touch encoding).
How is information kept in STM?
Maintenance rehearsal.
How is information passed from STM to LTM?
Prolonged rehearsal (usually elaborative).
How can information be lost from STM?
Information can decay if it is not rehearsed.
How does information pass from LTM to STM?
Retrieval.
How can information be lost in LTM?
Interference and retrieval failure.
