epi

common in adulthood

4

history

episodic sudden onset vertigo, tinnitus and hearing loss
aural fullness (sensation of fullness of increased pressure in the ears)

5

investigations

no specific test will confirm diagnosis
1 air-bone conduction
-unilateral sensorineual hearing loss
-air and bone conduction are equal
2 speech audiometry
-no abnormality detected on speech recognition threshold

6

what is menieres disease

idiopathic cause

7

what is menieres syndrome

secondary to known inner-ear disorders

8

risk factors

recent viral infection
genetic predisposition (family history)

9

examination

positive rombergs test

10

what does equal air and bone conduction indicate

underlying pathology is in the cochlea or auditory nerve
