Metabolic Regulation Flashcards
(10 cards)
Why is metabolic regulation required ?
- Prevents waste of energy
- Maintains homeostasis
- To store energy and release it when required
How is metabolism controlled ?
- Levels and accessibility of substrates
- Amounts of metabolic enzymes
- Modulation of catalytic activities of enzymes
What is enzyme turnover determined by ?
- Alteration of transcription factor by external signals
- Stability of mRNA species
- Rate of translation
- Rate of protein degradation
What is allosteric regulation?
The control of an enzymes activity by binding of a regulatory molecule at a site that is not the active site.
This causes a conformational change which either increases or decreases enzyme activity.
What is adenylate control ?
How the energy status of the cell regulates metabolic pathways
Describe the range of energy change
0 (all AMP)
1 (all ATP)
Name an ATP-generating pathway
Glycolysis
Name an ATP-utilising pathway
Lipogenesis
What is covalent modification?
A way to regulate enzyme activity by chemically adding or removing functional groups to the enzyme by reversible covalent bonds
What are the common types of covalent modification?
- Phosphorylation- changes enzyme shape and activity
- Acetylation- can regulate gene expression or enzyme activity
- Methylation- can affect protein-protein interactions
