The Basic Tissues Flashcards
(27 cards)
What are the 4 basic plant tissues ?
- Dermal
- Ground
- Vascular
- Meristem
What is dermal tissue ?
The outer layer of roots, stems and leaves
Eg. Epidermis, stomata and guard cells
What is the function of dermal tissue ?
- Transpiration barrier. Waxy cuticle on surface lowers transpiration.
- Gas exchange
- Defence and protection
What are the 3 types of ground tissue ?
- Parenchyma
- Collenchyma
- Sclerechyma
What is parenchyma ?
The most common ground tissue.
It has a thin cell wall.
It is the primary component of young plant organs.
What are the functions of parenchyma ?
- Storage of starch and other metabolites
- Photosynthesis
What is the function of collenchyma ?
Adaptable, mechanical support
What is sclerenchyma ?
They have primary and secondary cell walls.
Primary = cellulose
Secondary = lignin
It is formed of two types of cells :
1. Fibres- long, non living strands
2. Sclereids- hard covering around seeds of stone fruits like walnuts
What is the function of sclerenchyma ?
Rigid support and protection
What is vascular tissue ?
There are two types:
1. Xylem- dead, hollow cells. Flows from roots upwards.
2. Phloem- living cells. Multidirectional.
What is the function of vascular tissue ?
- Xylem- transports water and minerals
- Phloem- transports sugars and other nutrients
What is meristem tissue ?
Undifferentiated parenchyma cells.
Generate new cells that can differentiate into new cell types.
What is the function of meristem tissue ?
Responsible for plant growth.
Sites of active growth.
Apical meristems: in roots and shoots, causes lengthening
Lateral meristems: along sides of stems and roots, causing thickening
What are the 4 basic animal tissues ?
- Epithelium
- Connective tissue
- Muscle
- Nerve
What are the 3 types of muscle tissue ?
- Skeletal
- Cardiac
- Smooth
Describe skeletal muscle
It is striated.
Attached to bones via tendons.
Voluntary movements, posture and force generation.
Describe cardiac muscle
Striated, branched, cylindrical cells that are connected by intercalated discs.
Involuntary muscle responsible for pumping blood through the heart.
Abundant mitochondria for energy.
Describe smooth muscle
Non-striated
Involuntary muscle
Found in blood vessels, intestines, bladder etc.
What is the function of smooth muscle ?
- Peristalsis in the gut
- Vasoconstriction in blood vessels
- Bladder release
What is nerve tissue ?
Composed of neurons and glial cells.
Found in the brain, spinal cord, sensory organs.
What is the function of nerve tissue ?
- Detect stimuli
- Transmit nerve impulses
- Process and interpret information
What is the function of connective tissue ?
- Support
- Wound healing
- Storage of energy
- Packing and space filling
Describe types of connective tissue
- Bone- made mainly of extra cellular matrix (ECM)
- Fibroblasts- secrete ECM
- Adipocytes- store lipids as droplets
What are tissues ?
A collection of cells and extracellular materials specialised for a particular function
