1

What isa ferrous metal ?

Contain iron
Generally tend to corrode (rust) so need some form of protection against corrosion
Almost all metals are magnetic

2

Examples of ferrous metals ?

Mild steel
Stainless steel

3

Properties and uses of mild steel ?

Properties
The most common ferrous metal and the softest one
Quite cheap and strong metal so it is used frequently in tech design
Rusts easily and cannot be hardened or tempered
Uses
Used for nuts and bolts, screws, stool legs, washing machines and car bodies

4

Properties and uses of stainless steel?

Properties
A hard metal that will not rust but is more expensive
Uses
Used for sinks, kettles, medical equipment and cutlery

5

What is a non- ferrous metals ?

(Do not contain iron ) and therefore not corrode

6

Examples of non - ferrous metals?

Aluminium
Copper

7

Properties and uses of aluminium ?

Properties
Light, soft, easily shaped and silvery in colour
Conducts heat and electricity well
Polishes well
Uses
Used for window frames, saucepans, cooking foil and aircraft

8

What are the properties and uses of copper ?

Tough but easily shaped and soldered , as relatively soft, mal lu le and ductile
Conducts heat electricity well
Quite expensive
Uses
Used for water pipes, wires

9

Why are alloys of metals formed ?

To combine he properties of more than on material

10

Example of a metal alloy
Properties and uses ?

BRASS
Properties
Heavy, quite hard and quite strong
Malinke and ductile
Corrosion resistant

Uses
Electrical parts , door handles, bath room fittings and accessories and musical instruments
