Methods of Data Collection

A

20 sample sites were selected at regular (100m) intervals along the course of Wycoller Beck, covering a distance of 2km.

At each site:

  1. Channel width measured in metres (water’s edge to water’s edge).
  2. Channel depth readings (m) taken at 10 regular intervals from left bank to right bank, facing downstream.
  3. Velocity (m/s), measured using ‘float and timer method’ over a 5 metre stretch. This was repeated 5 times at each cross section so that an average (mean) could be calculated.
  4. 25 sediment samples were slected at random along the cross section, they were measured in mm along their B axis (long axis) and compared to the ‘Power’s Roundess Scale/Index’ for shape (value 1-6).
