Risk Assessment
To minimise the risks associated with primary data collection we devised a risk assessment.
For example, to reduce the risk of drowning we were all prohibited from entering a site of the river where by the water level would be above our knees.
As well as this, to reduce the risk of getting lost we stayed in groups of four at each site of the river and teaching staff stayed between equal distances of the sites, so that they could be easily located.
Moreover, another risk included one to the environment but not ourselves; disrupting and scaring wildlife, such as sheep, as we visited in March so it was lambing season. To avoid this at all times students were prohibited from approaching widlife and instructed to stick to walking along the sides of the course of the river.
Falling over - Wear sturdy shoes i.e. walking boots of wellington boots.
Hypothermia - Wear warm layers with gloves, hats and scarfs. Extra layers could be carried in students’ bags such as spare socks. Hot drinks and snacks could also be carried in the students bag.
