Flashcards in micro: worms Deck (26):
1

enterobius vermicularis

= pinworm, a nematode. anal pruritis, scotch tape test. Tx: bendazoles

2

ascaris lumbricoides

= giant roundworm, a nematode. transmission: fecal-oral; eggs visible in feces under microscope. -> intestinal infxn w/possible obstruction at ileocecal valve. Tx: bendazoles

3

strongyloides

transmission: larvae in soil penetrate skin. -> intestinal infxn -> D/V, epigastric pain (mimics peptic ulcur). Tx: ivermectin or bendazoles

4

ancylostoma, necator

= hookworms. transmission: larvae penetrate skin. -> intestinal infxn -> anemia by sucking blood from intestinal walls. Tx: bendazoles or pyrantel pamoate

5

trichinella spiralis

transmission: fecal-oral; undercooked meat (esp. pork). -> intestinal infxn, larvae enter bloodstream and encyst in striated muscle cells -> muscle inflam. trichinosis = fever, N/V, periorbital edema, myalgia. Tx: bendazoles

6

onchocerca volvulus

transmission: female blackfly bite. -> hyperpigmented skin and river blindness (black flies, black skin nodules, black sight); allergic rxn to microfilaria. Tx: ivermectin (IVER for RIVER blindness)

7

loa loa

transmission: deerfly, horsefly, mangofly. -> skin swelling. worm in conjuntiva. Tx: diethylcarbamazine

8

wuchereria bancrofti

transmission: female mosquito. -> elephantiasis: worms block lymphatics: takes 9mo-1yr to get Sx. Tx: diethylcarbamazine

9

toxocara canis

transmission: fecal-oral. -> visceral larva migrans. Tx: bendazoles

10

nematode routes of infxn: ingestion

you'll get sick if you EATT these: Enterobius, Ascaris, Toxocara, Trichinella

11

nematode routes of infxn: cutaneous

these get into your feet from the SANd: Strongyloides, Ancylostoma, Necator

12

nematode routes of infxn: bites

lay LOW to avoid getting bitten: Loa loa, Onchocerca, Wuchereria

13

taenia solium

= tapeworm. larvae from undercooked pork -> intestinal infxn, Tx: praziquantel.
egg ingestion - > cysticerocosis, neurocysticercosis. Tx: praziquantel, albendazole for neuro.

14

diphylloborothrium latum

ingestion of larvae from raw freshwater fish -> vit B12 def b/c tapeworm competes for B12 in the intestine) -> megaloblastic anemia. Tx: praziquantel

15

echinococcus granulosus

ingestion of eggs from dog feces (sheep = intermediate host) -> hydatid cysts in liver -> anaphylaxis if Ag released, so need to inject ethanol or hypertonic saline to kill daughter cysts before removal. Tx: albendazole

16

schistosoma

tranmission: snails = host, cercariae penetrate skin of humans. S. mansoni (egg w/lateral spine) -> HSM, fibrosis, inflammation. chronic infxn w/S. haematobium (egg w/terminal spine) -> squamous cell CA of bladder -> painless hematuria, + pulm HTN. Tx: praziquantel

17

clonorchis sinensis

transmission: undercooked fish. -> biliary tract inflam -? pigmented gallstones. associated w/cholangiocarcinoma. Tx: praziquantel.

18

biliary tract dz, cholangioCA

clonorchis sinensis

19

brain cysts, seizures

taenia solium

20

hematuria, squamous cell bladder CA

schistosoma haematobium

21

liver (hydatid) cysts

echinococcus granulosus

22

microcytic anemia

ancylostoma, necator

23

myalgias, periorbital edema

trichinella spiralis

24

perianal pruritis

enterobius

25

portal HTN

schistosoma mansoni, schistosoma japonicum

26

vit B12 def

diphylloborthrium latum
