Classification

Benzodiazepine

Mechanism of Action

  • Binds to benzodiazepine receptors and enhances the effects of GABA
  • Acts at the level of the limbic, thalamic, & hypothalamic regions of the CNS to produce short-acting CNS depression (including sedation, skelatal muscle relaxation, & anticonvulsant activity)

Indications

  • Sedation
  • Anxiety
  • Skeletal Muscle relaxation
  • Sedation before cardioversion

Contraindications

  • Acute-angle glaucoma
  • Pregnancy
  • Known sensitivity

Adverse Effects

  • Respiratory depression, apnea
  • Hypotension
  • Drowsiness, fatigue
  • Headache, nausea
  • Confusion, oversedation

Administration

  • Adult: 1-5 mg IV/IO
  • Peds: Refer to length-weight-based chart

Special Considerations

  • Patients receiving midazolam require frequent monitoring of vital signs & pulseOx
  • Be prepared to support airway & ventilation
