The movement of people from place to place

Internal, within a society or international
Define Immigration
The movement into a society

The movement out of a society

Why were there so many minority ethnic groups?
Due to a greater diversity of family patterns
What are the main reasons for emigration?
Push and Pull Factors
What are the Push Factors?
Low wages and unemployment
What are the Pull Factors?
Higher wages or better opportunities abroad
What do these economic migration reasons contrast with?
Those who migrate due to religious, or political reasons
Who accounts for around 28% of all births in the UK?
Non-UK born mothers
How does immigration affect age?
Immigrants are normally younger and more fertile, thus producing more babies
How do immigrants help to lower the dependency ratio?
They’re likely to be of working age
But why may some immigrants increase the dependency ratio?
May have more children. But, overtime, they will join the labour force and decrease the DR once again
How are immigrants’ fertility rate affected?
The longer they are settled, the closer their fertility rate matches to the national average
= This reduces the dependency ratio
What may old people do?
Older migrants may return to their country of origin to retire peacefully
