Milestones & Reflexes Flashcards
(37 cards)
What is the rooting reflex?
Elicited by stroking an infant’s cheek or the edge of an infant’s mouth, causing the infant to turn their head toward the side that is touched and start to suck.
This reflex is important for feeding and bonding.
What does the palmar grasp reflex involve?
Elicited by placing an object in an infant’s palm, causing the infant to grasp the object.
This reflex typically disappears around 5-6 months of age.
What is the expected finding for the plantar grasp reflex?
Elicited by touching the sole of an infant’s foot, resulting in the infant’s toes curling downward.
This reflex usually fades around 9-12 months.
Describe the Moro reflex.
Elicited by allowing the head and trunk of an infant in a semi-sitting position to fall backward to an angle of at least 30°, leading to the infant’s arms and legs symmetrically extending, then abducting while fingers spread to form a C shape.
This reflex can be observed until about 4-6 months of age.
What happens during the tonic neck reflex?
Elicited by turning an infant’s head to one side, causing the infant to extend the arm and leg on that side and flex the arm and leg on the opposite side.
This reflex is often referred to as the ‘fencer position’ and typically fades by 5-7 months.
What does the Babinski reflex entail?
Elicited by stroking the outer edge of the sole of an infant’s foot up toward the toes, resulting in the infant’s toes fanning upward and out.
This reflex is present at birth and usually disappears by 12 months.
How is the stepping reflex elicited?
Elicited by holding an infant upright with their feet touching a flat surface, causing the infant to make stepping movements.
This reflex is observable until about 2 months of age.
What is the expected age range for the rooting reflex?
Birth to 4 months.
What is the expected age range for the palmar grasp reflex?
Birth to 4 months.
At what age does the Moro reflex typically disappear?
Birth to 4 months
What is the expected age range for the tonic neck reflex?
Birth to 3 to 4 months.
What is the expected age range for the Babinski reflex?
Birth to 1 year.
What is the expected age range for the stepping reflex?
Birth to 4 weeks.
Until What age does plantar grasp last?
Birth to 8 months
What is demonstrated at 1 month of age?
Demonstrates head lag
This indicates that the infant has not yet developed sufficient neck muscle control.
What can an infant do at 2 months of age?
Lifts head off mattress when prone
This shows improvement in neck strength and control.
At what age does an infant raise their head and shoulders off the mattress when prone?
3 months
This signifies further development in gross motor skills.
What happens to head lag by 3 months?
Only slight head lag
Indicates increased neck muscle strength.
What gross motor skill is achieved at 4 months of age?
Rolls from back to side
This marks a significant milestone in motor development.
What gross motor skills are achieved by 6 months?
Rolls from front to back and rolls from back to front
This shows further coordination and control.
What can an infant do by 7 months of age?
Bears full weight on feet and sits, leaning forward on both hands
Indicates readiness for standing and balance improvement.
At 8 months, what gross motor skills are observed?
Sits unsupported
Reflects enhanced strength and balance.
What ability does a 9-month-old infant demonstrate?
pulls to a standing position
& Creeps on hands and knees
This is a precursor to crawling.
What gross motor skill is achieved at 10 months?
Changes from a prone to a sitting position
This indicates improved coordination and strength.
