what is minority social influence
a form of social influence which occurs when an individual or small group of people influence a larger group to change their attitude or behaviour towards an issue
what happens as a result of minority influence
conversion not compliance
people will scrutinise the message which causes the level of process to be deeper and tends to outlast the group
what are the 4 behavioural styles which causes a minority group to be more successful
consistency
commitment
flexibility
relevance to society
what is consistency
overtime consistency in the minorities view increases the amount of interest from other people
it makes other people rethink their own views
what is commitment
hard to do without appearing inflexible
suggest certainty confidence and courage in the face of a hostile majority
increases amount of interest further from majority group members - the augmentation principle
what is flexibility
if seen as inflexible and uncomprimising unlikely to change views of majority
if appear flexible they are likely to seem less extreme and as reasonable and co operative
they will have a better chance of changing majority views key is not to not alienate the majority and drive them from their viewpoint
what is relevance to society
society has to be ready to accept the change the minority group campaigning
eg gay marriage
