Mitosis Flashcards
(18 cards)
What are the TWO reasons a cell would undergo mitosis?
Growth and repair of a multicellular organism
How many cells does mitosis produce?
Two daughter cells
If mitosis occurs perfectly, the cells at the end should be _______.
identical
What are the THREE main phases of the cell cycle?
Interphase, Mitosis, Cytokinesis
What are the THREE phases of interphase in order?
G₁, S, G₂
What 2 major events take place during interphase?
- Cell growth
- DNA is copied
What are the FOUR phases of mitosis in order?
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase
What happens during cytokinesis?
The cytoplasm divides
What is G0?
Resting phase where the cell isn’t dividing
What kind of cells are always in G0?
Nerve and heart cells
What happens if we have an injury to nerve and heart cells?
Can’t reproduce more cells
What happens during Prophase?
Nuclear membrane breaks down, DNA condenses from chromatin into chromosomes, and centrioles start making spindle fibers
What happens during Metaphase?
Chromosomes line up as sister chromatids in the middle of the cell
What happens during Anaphase?
Sister chromatids pulled apart towards opposite sides of the cell
What happens during Telophase?
Chromosomes reach opposite sides, chromosomes start to de-condense back into chromatin, nuclear membrane starts to form
What is the function of G1
Check for nutrients, growth factors, and DNA damage
What is the function of G2
To check for cell size and DNA replication
What is the function of S
DNA synthesis
