Genetics Test Flashcards
(34 cards)
What is Mendelian genetics?
Characteristics of traits that are controlled by two alleles, one dominant and one recessive.
Define gene.
A segment of DNA that codes for specific proteins and traits.
What is an allele?
Different versions of a gene (A or a).
What does homozygous mean?
Two of the same alleles (AA or aa).
What does heterozygous mean?
Two different alleles (Aa).
What is a dominant allele?
The allele that shows up.
What is a recessive allele?
The allele that is only expressed if 2 copies are present.
What is Mendel’s Law of Segregation?
When producing gametes, the two alleles for each trait separate during meiosis ensuring genetic diversity
What is Mendel’s Law of Independent Assortment?
Genes on separate chromosomes sort independently during meiosis showing how different traits are inherited independetly
What is a dihybrid cross?
Shows the result of crossing 2 individuals with 2 traits.
What is complex inheritance?
Genetic traits that don’t follow Mendelian genetics.
Define incomplete dominance.
When a mixture of the phenotype is expressed in a heterozygous organism.(RW=pink)
Define codominance.
Both phenotypes are expressed in a heterozygous organism.
(RW=red+white spots/patches)
What are sex-linked traits?
Characteristics determined by genes on the X chromosome.
What does autosomal mean?
Any chromosome that isn’t a sex chromosome.
What are multiple alleles?
More than 2 alleles may exist for a trait in a population.
(Blood types)
What are polygenic traits?
More than one gene controls a single trait.
What is a pedigree?
A genetic family tree.
What part of a Punnett square shows the possible results of meiosis?
Top and left sides.
What part of a Punnett square shows the possible results of fertilization?
The inside boxes.
True or False: Punnett squares can give you actual outcomes.
False.
Traits that follow complex patterns of inheritance are influenced by _______
genetic and environmental factors.
What are the sex chromosomes in a biological female?
XX.
What are the sex chromosomes in a biological male?
XY.
