MOD 7 - COURSE 1 - PT 1 - MINIMALLY INVASIVE PROCEUDRES - HANDLING AND RESTRAINT Flashcards
What are some generalised methods that improve aniamls stress while handling or restraining
- general approaches
- acclimations
- practriciticing restrain techniques - confidence
- handle aniamald gently - no loud noise/ suddent movment
- handle firmly - no chance to escape
what are the methods of handling nd restriaing mice
- easy nromally 0 but can be injured - i.e. if dropped - some mice = more active than others
- tail restraint - short term
- scruff restrain
how do you scruff a mice
- lift base - base of tail - place on cage lid , tack base of tial between 3rd and 4th finger - gently pull back on tain - cause mouse to grasp surface
-0 flipping palm over - use same hand - graps scruff of mouse - extend fingers around jawline and draw back - apply enough firmness - prevent mice frm turning head
- back skin can be incorperated using middle and ring finger for additonal grasp
how can you handle rats
- more docile - bite = uncommon
- can be picked by base of tail - short amount of time
how can you restrain rats
- pick up rat - one movement - grasp around body
- if rate = active - temporary restrain - achived - grasp base of tail - gently grasp around body - move rat to body
- form scruff hold - while on arm/surface - rat can grip - roatate drip around back of rat - grasp loose skin 0 aroun =d shoulder and back regions - rat = lifted from surface
- not too much pressure on thorax - restricts breathing
for the restrain to perform procedures how deoes this happen
- same as prev restrain - 2nd tech - restrains hindquaters while other one carrys technique
how do you handle hamsters
- aggresive afer startled#- pick up by lose skin of neck - care to make sure they dont bite
- when restrain - gather skin tightly - immobilize hamster
- can trasnfer by using hands as a scoop
- make sure they know youre there before pick up
hwo do you handle guine pigs
- docile - can stampede
- be quite
- place one hand under front legs and chest - thumb adn forefingers directly behing front legs
- place palm under hindquaters support weight
- for greater control - fingers of hand suppot rumpts - shoudl grasp adn restrian hind legs
how do you handle rabbtis
- sensitive backs - support hindwauters all time
- ears = easily injured
- scruff 0 nape of neck with one hand and support hindwauters with other hand
- rabbits - held for short time - i.e. changing cage
- if rabbits = handled across rooms- support hindquaters with hand tuck int head into crook of harm - free arm to open cages etc - do not use for procedures
when should restraint devices be used
- when manual restrain = doesn tlimit aniamsl mvoement for purpose of examination - collection drug adminsitration, therapy, experimental maipulation
- when the experiment cant eb achieved through other emans - prevent injuries sometimes
what guidelines are available for when to use restraint devices
- not used for convience
- shortest amount of time possible
- chose appripraite sized device
- match technique to device given
what restrain devices are available for small aniamsl
- restraint tubes
- restrain bags
- restraint collars
what are restraint tubes
- aniamsl = placed inr estrain - first hand restraining aniaml and releasting it head first into opening - or gently pull them backwards into restrain device
- position divider in place - aniamsl spine = aligned adn minimum achievement = achieved - dont damage tail feet etc
- ensure animal positions has enough ventilation
what are restraint bags -
i.e. decapicone
- flexy cone shape pieces of thin plastic - hold in one end - small eough for nose - not rest of body
- chose appropriate size
- injections - given trhoguh thin plastic material
- rpolonged restraint - not reccomeneded - plastic retain heat
what are restraint collars and what is there use ?
- long term prevention of certain undesirable behaviours = discourgaed - self injury
- acclimitisation period - alloted for aniamsl
- self grooming = important ocmponent - so restraint collar= removed frequently
- aniasl- collar = fited - so not too tight or loose - difficult to establish until collar = fitted on animals
- can be severly disressed - could hyperventilate, depressed - develop hyperthermia
- IMPERITIVE - ANIAMLS REACH FOOD AND WATER
