modern tech Flashcards
(21 cards)
equipment
- HR monitor
- Football boot technology
- Football technology
- Gumshields, PCD equipment
- GPS vests
- Ball sports - development of ball
rules
- VAR
- TMO
- Hawk eye
Facilities
- Pitches: 4g, 3g (more available for grass roots)
- Pro football teams + cricket have hybrid pitch (mix of natural + artificial grass) - more durable
- Floodlights around pitches
+ve impacts on modern tech:
- More fair decisions, no ambiguity in decisions - either right or wrong (e.g. VAR)
- Facilities = more accessible
- Better facilities such as physio - better diagnostics
- Better protection - increase ppt + less injury
- Floodlights around pitches, increase accessibility + can play in dark
-ve impacts on modern tech:
- slows down game e.g. var
- modification of some rules - can take away traditional aspects of game
- some equipment can be viewed as cheating e.g. carbon plated soles of shoes
- v expensive - not everyone can access this, get var at elite but not recreational level
Things to consider for +ves + -ves: all relates to participation, consider elite + recreational
- How we monitor exercise safely
- Equipment
- Facilities
- Access
Access:
Elite sport:
- Better facilities
- More disabled specific training venues
→ these 2 have dramatically increased overall quality of elite sport
Access:
General participation:
- Increased access to facilities
- Accessible facilities e.g. disabled lifts, wide door, adapted facilities e.g. indoor ski centres, ramps, e.g. lawn darts
- Increased inclusion, adapted equipment for mobility
- E.g. adapted wheelchairs for basketball, adapted equipment for other needs e.g. for inclusion - swim pool hoists
- Creation of new sports e.g. boccia, blind cricket + football
Facilities:
Elite sport:
- Specialist training facilities:
- Bisham abbey (2m pound facility for 2012 oly prep)
- Ice pools
- Altitude tents
- London 2012 legacy
- Velodrome in manchester
- White water rafting in london
- Wind tunnels in motor racing or cycling:
- Altitude chambers - rooms designated for altitude - sleep in altitude levels, can adjust levels (e.g. lboro)
Facilities:
General ppt:
- Floodlights - greater ppt
- All weather surfaces
- Indoor venues
- Indoor ski venues
- Disabled friendly venues or sports
Equipment:
Elite sport:
- Case study - tennis - elite players have forefront of tech - this in a few years filters to the general pop
- Case study - athletics shoes + track
- As equipment has improved, so has performance:
- Footwear
- Training aids
- Research + development into S+C (underwater treadmills etc)
- Also improves safety (cricket helmets after Phil Hughes died) - can get head scans so helmet is perfect fit
- Disability sports have made huge gains equipment wise e.g. tailor fit prosthetics
Equipment
General ppt:
- As elite equipment improves, this only eventually benefits the general population
- Golf clubs/rackets/playing footwear
- Training wear such as skins or under armour
- All have improved the quality, comfort, safety and overall performance of lower level participants
- Smartphone technology has changed the way people engage with activity - e.g. smart watches, gps vests, HR monitor
- Smart scales etc - however accuracy isn’t perfect on them all
- Disability friendly or adapted equip to make sports more accessible e.g. the wheelchairs in wheelchair basketball + rugby, e.g. prosthetic limbs
Monitoring exercise safely:
Elite sport:
- Greater use of medical testing/screening
- Case study - christian eriksen
- Change of policy at games since fabrice muamba died - game stops/medical team help
- Technology has helped recover from injury + monitor injury improvements e.g. force plates
- Allowed people to continue playing - arm brace, cheek protector
- Face masks in hockey etc
Monitoring exercise safely:
General ppt:
- Fitbits, smart watches
- Smart scales
- People have begun to be more aware of overall health + gone above and beyond just weight etc
- Defibrillators
Has tech limited or reduced ppt
Elite sport:
- Created an unfair advantage? Richer countries can ‘pay to win’ if they have more resources to better equipment e.g. british cycling have biggest budget in the world - went to oly with best bikes
- Do some teams now not enter as they cannot afford to ppt
- F1 - major issue of capping costs - richer teams used to win as they could afford better upgrades, engineers etc
- Could anyone from a poor background play elite level in sports that require expensive technology? E.g.sailor, F1, cyclists, rower
- Discrepancy between sports
- Some countries have more money than others
- Facilities
- Injury recovery/prevention e.g. sports science, health screening, altitude tents - more ppt
- Disability sports? - new facilities + infrastructure to ppt increase, however v expensive to ppt so ppt reduced
- Can talk about how modern tech improves elite sport which means it a higher standard to watch + role models created - therefore more people are inspired and want to participate in that sport
Has tech limited or reduced ppt
General ppt:
- Cost of equipment has gone significantly up
- Disability athletes lose out because the cost of their equipment is so high
- Has greater technology led to a more sedentary lifestyle?
- Mobile phones/consoles/do people prefer to watch now instead of playing?
- Modern tech means convenience is v high - watch games on phone/tv instead of going to stadiums, play fifa instead of actually playing football e.g. - less active as they prefer to engage on the sport online and in games instead of physically
- Cost also has an impact - equipment etc can be a huge advantage
- Not everyone can afford to play
- Technology means consoles/phones etc, people can engage in a different way than before
- 4g linked to injuries e.g. acl as boot gets caught on 4g surface - reduces ppt
- Indoor facilities → tennis courts, allows ppt to increase, can play all year round
- Can talk about how modern tech improves elite sport which means it a higher standard to watch + role models created - therefore more people are inspired and want to participate in that sport
Impact on fair outcomes:
+ve effects on tech in fairer outcomes:
- reversed → black and white decisions can be made - e.g. in or out
- Improved detection of foul play helps to reduce cheating + gamesmanship, + reduce injuries - punish bad tackles e.g.
- Better timing and measuring devices e.g. swimming touchpads
- Better detection for doping and drug cheats
- Officials have greater accountability
- DRS cricket
- Hawkeye tennis
- VAR football
Impact on fair outcomes:
-ve effects on tech in fairer outcomes:
- elite level only
- very expensive so not consistently used (FA cup (can’t use in early rounds as lower down teams don’t have access) in comparison to Premier League?)
- drug takers are generally ahead of the testers, using sophisticated technology
- massive increase in referee scrutiny (e.g. offside by the tiniest margin which player can’t really control - stop attacking chances etc)
- elite sport have access to top technology like s+c - grassroots don’t have access - increases the divide
Impact on entertainment:
+ves
- Fan experience improves with live screen replays both at hone and in the ground
- Camera technology like SpiderCam - camera on wires that moves around pitch, can do slo mo
- Fans can still watch sport even if they cant make the game (+ve + -ve)
Impact on entertainment:
-ves
- VAR slows game down and can alienate fans
- increase frustration levels if they watch replays back without VAR - fans don’t have an explanation as to why decision made
- start times now inconvenience fans, based on TV - want to find optimum viewing hrs
Discuss whether modern tech has made sport fairer (5 marks)
- It’s made it fairer in elite level sports like tennis, where the use of hawkeye slows the ball down and tracks it (when the ball is moving at rapid screens so umpire cant track it), the umpire can call it as in or out - definite answer, more accurate
- It’s also improved detection of foul play, can ensure the correct player gets sent off and if the card is the correct one - by watching a replay
- On the other hand, it is only for elite level sport, therefore its inconsistent, as in the FA cup it cannot be used in the early rounds as teams don’t have access as its too expensive, therefore not all decisions will be fair
- Also drug takers are generally ahead of the testers due to them using sophisticated technology, therefore the drugs are not found in system so they can get away with cheating - therefore not fair
- Overall, I think that modern technology has made sport fairer, as moments in games can be slowed down and a definite answer of in or out can be made. Ensures there’s no grey areas and that the officials and umpires/referees can be confident in a decision
