module 17 Flashcards
What is Weber’s law?
The difference threshold is a constant proportion of the original stimulus; the bigger the stimulus, the bigger the change needed to notice a difference.
Example: You will notice a change from 11 lbs to 15 lbs, but not from 7 lbs to 100 lbs because the proportion is smaller.
What is sensory adaptation?
Your senses adjust to constant stimulation and stop responding strongly.
What is a perceptual set?
A mental predisposition to perceive one thing and not another; it influences what we hear, taste, feel, and see.
What did researchers demonstrate about emotions?
They showed that emotions can affect our perceptions, such as walking distances feeling longer when fatigued by prior exercise.
What is parapsychology?
The study of paranormal phenomena, like ESP, telepathy, and psychokinesis.
What are testable forms of ESP?
Telepathy (mind-to-mind communication), clairvoyance (perceiving remote events), and precognition (perceiving future events).
