module 19 Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is Gestalt?
An organized whole; Gestalt psychologists emphasized our tendency to integrate pieces of information into meaningful wholes.
What is figure-ground?
The organization of the visual field into objects (the figures) that stand out from their surroundings.
What is grouping in perception?
The perceptual tendency to organize stimuli into coherent groups.
What is depth perception?
The ability to see things in 3D and judge how far away they are.
What is visual cliff?
A tool used to test if babies can sense depth.
What are binocular cues?
Depth cues that require both eyes to work.
What is retinal disparity?
Your eyes see slightly different images, and your brain uses the difference to figure out how close something is.
What are monocular cues?
Depth cues that work with just one eye.
What is the phi phenomenon?
When lights blink on and off quickly, it looks like they’re moving.
What is perceptual constancy?
An object stays the same shape or color even if the angle or lighting changes.
What is color constancy?
An object stays the same size and color even if the light changes how it looks.
What is perceptual adaptation?
The ability to adjust to a changed visual world.
How do our brains organize sensory information?
Our brains organize sensory info into meaningful wholes using rules like proximity and closure.
How do we perceive depth?
We see depth with binocular cues and monocular cues (size, light/shadow).
What do perceptual constancies allow us to do?
They let us see objects as stable despite changes in distance, angle, and lighting.
