module 76-78 Flashcards
social faciliation
improved performance on simple or well learned tasks in the presence of others
social loafing
happens when people in a group put in less effort because they think others will do the work
deindividuation
when people in a group lose their sense of personal identity and self-awareness, often leading to behavior they wouldn’t normally do alone.
groupthink
when a group prioritizes harmony and agreement over critical thinking, leading to poor decision-making. People avoid conflict, so they might go along with ideas they don’t fully agree with.
group polarization
when people in a group discuss an idea they all mostly agree on, causing their opinions to become even more extreme.
door in the face technique
persuasion method where someone starts with a large request (expecting it to be rejected) and then follows up with a smaller request, making it more likely the person will agree.
face in the door technique
it starts with a small request to get someone to agree, then gradually increases to larger requests.
prejudice
an unfair, negative attitude toward a group and its members, it includes stereotypes, negative feelings and a tendency to discriminate
stereotype
a generalized (sometimes accurate) belief about a group of people
discrimation
unjustifiable negative behavior toward a group and its members
just-world phenomenon
the tendency for people to believe the world is just and that people therefore get what they deserve
ingroup
“us” - people with who share a common identity
outgroup
“them”- those perceived as different/or apart from our ingroup
scapegoat theory
the tendency to blame someone for one’s own problems
frustration-aggression principle
the idea that when people feel frustrated (because they can’t achieve something they want or expect), they are more likely to become aggressive or act out
social script
culturally modeled guide for how to act in various situations
three levels to aggressive behavior
- genetics
- neural (activity in brain areas)
- biochemical (excess testorerone)
