What is Molluscum Contagiosum
Molluscum contagiosum is a benign viral skin infection caused by the pox virus, it is transmitted by direct skin to skin contact.
what advice should be given to people with molluscum contagiosum ?
Patients must be warned of the risks of auto-inoculation and advised against shaving and waxing when lesions are present to prevent further spread.
Patients are also advised against squeezing the lesions as this could lead to superinfection or spread to uninfected skin.
what is the treatment for molluscum contagiosum ?
Molluscum contagiosum is a self-limiting condition which typically resolves spontaneously within 18 months. Treatment is not usually required in immunocompetent people, especially in people with mild disease, people who are not bothered by the lesions, and in cases where lesions affect delicate areas (such as the face or groin in young children).
