What is pubic lice?
Parasitic infestation by Pthirus pubis, lives on hair and sucks blood. Transmitted through intimate contact; parent/child transmission possible.
Pubic lice are small insects that primarily infest the pubic hair but can also be found in other coarse body hair.
What are the symptoms of pubic lice?
Itching, red/blue spots, visible nits/lice.
Itching is caused by an allergic reaction to the bites of the lice.
How do we diagnose pubic lice?
Visual ID of lice/nits.
Diagnosis can often be made by simply examining the affected area for lice or their eggs.
How do we treat pubic lice?
5% Permethrin cream, apply once weekly for 2 doses. Apply to body, leave for 12 hours (or overnight), then wash off. Treat all household contacts.
What is the follow-up procedure after treating pubic lice?
Arrange referral to GUM clinic for contact tracing & STI screening. Follow-up in 1 week for clearance.
It is important to ensure that all contacts are treated to prevent reinfestation.
