motivation to work: motivators at work Flashcards
(14 cards)
extrinsic motivation
driven by external factors
monetary or avoiding neg consequences
can see direct observable results of behaviour > can focus energy and increase motivation
but short term and can cause burnout and demotivation if used frequently j to get results
types of extrinsic motivation
pay
bonuses
profit sharing
performance related pay/PRP
intrinsic motivation
internal emotions
driven by feeling of satisfaction, recognition etc
motivated due to feeling of being valued and sense of belonging
types of intrinsic motivation
recognition
praise
respect
empowerment
sense of belonging
deci and ryan’s 1985 self determination theory
self determination = ability to manage self, make confident choices, think on feet
key assumptions of self determination
1) need for growth drives behaviour: keen to grow and improve and gain mastery over a challenge
essential for self development
linked to intrinsic motivation
2) autonomous motivation:
self determination more focus on intrinsic like autonomy
acknowledges extrincsic
purely self determined is intrinsic and pure pleasre and internal satisfaction
non self determined is where task has to get done and no pleasure
little choice in what person does
demos lakc of control or autonomy
three basic needs of deci ryan self determination
1) autonomy
2) relatedness
3) competence
autonomy
self governance
independence
control of own behaviour and destiny
allowing choice over how they work
autonomy can be decreased if extrinsic rewards always given if behaviour intrinsically motivated bc eventually workers will j do shit for the extrinsic reward not job satisfaction
relatedness
need to build relationships w others
attachment and belonging
part of a social group
isolation and lack of support means self determination hard
competence
having the right qualities to perform a task such as a particular skill IQ judgement or strength
competence = interact effectively w environment
achieve goals
obtain mastery over environment
pos feedback competence increase
and constructive feedback so they know what gone wrong and improve
motivators at work strength
research support
deci and ryan 1999 128 exp review to see effects of extrinsic rewards on instrinsic motivation
found rewards depended on task completion or performance related decreased intrinsic motivation
people dont take responsibility to motivate self and short term gains prioritised
kohn 1994 showed if an org used rewards to control behaviour then more surveillance and competition will follow
decreasing intrinsic motivation
motivators at work weakness cultural differences
diff motivators in individualistic and collectivist
haggar et al 2013
inntrinsic higher in individualist groups when offered personal choice on task than collectivist
intrinsic high when asked by manager
diff aspects of motivation important to diff cultures
these theories fail to take them into acc
motivators determinism vs free will
weakness
determinism based on type of motivation
extrinsic = low intrinsic
vice versa
not the case for all and individual diff in persoanlity must be considered
for some motivated no matter the reward
or external factors icnrease or decrease
motivators app to everyday life
self determination theory to irl sitchs
managers knowing controlling rewards decrease motibation
intrinsic increase
can ensure workplace needs met
worker satisfaction and productivity
SO USEFUL!
but weakness = ethnocentric = western idea of workforce motivation
