Characteristics of gout

A

Mono sodium Urate crystal deposition caused by metabolism disorder->hyperuricemia. Can be 2* to disease of high metabolic turnover eg haemolytic anemia

Crystal analysis from joint aspiration :negatively birefringent needle shaped intracellular crystals

Mgmt:Colchicine for acute,allopurinol and probenecid

Characteristics of pseudo gout

A

Inflammatory arthritis caused by intraarticular calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition. Often acute mono articular tenderness

Crystal analysis via joint aspiration:positively birefringent rhomboid crystals

Mgmt:NSAIDs,steroids for acute,colchicine for chronic or prophylactic
