MT CH5 Treatment Flashcards
(16 cards)
alkaline phosphatase?
An enzyme needed in the formation of bone; serum activity of this enzyme is useful in diagnosis
Alkaline phosphatase levels can indicate bone disorders or liver disease.
arthrocentesis?
Aspiration of fluid from a joint by needle puncture
This procedure is often used to diagnose joint disorders or relieve swelling.
arthrodesis?
Surgical immobilization (fusion) of a joint; artificial ankylosis
This procedure is typically performed to alleviate pain in a joint affected by arthritis.
arthroplasty?
Partial or total replacement of a joint with a prosthesis
Commonly performed for hips and knees to restore function and relieve pain.
arthroscopy?
Use of an endoscope to examine the interior of a joint or to perform surgery on the joint
The instrument used is an arthroscope, allowing minimally invasive procedures.
diskectomy?
Surgical removal of a herniated intervertebral disk; also spelled discectomy
The term is often used in the context of spinal surgery.
orthopedics study?
The study and treatment of disorders of the skeleton, muscles, and associated structures
Literally means ‘straight child’; also spelled orthopaedics.
reduction of a fracture?
Return of a fractured bone to a normal position; may be closed or open
Closed reduction does not require surgery, while open reduction does.
traction
The process of drawing or pulling, such as traction of the head in the treatment of injuries to the cervical vertebrae
Often used in treating fractures and muscle injuries.
an anti-inflammatory agent?
Drug that reduces inflammation; includes steroids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
Examples include hydrocortisone and ibuprofen.
bisphosphonate?
Agent used to prevent and treat osteoporosis; increases bone mass by decreasing bone turnover
Examples include alendronate (Fosamax), risedronate (Actonel), and ibandronate (Boniva).
nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)?
Drug that reduces inflammation but is not a steroid; examples include aspirin and ibuprofen
NSAIDs inhibit prostaglandins, which promote inflammation.
selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM)?
Drug that acts on estrogen receptors; raloxifene (Evista) is an example
SERMs are used to prevent bone loss after menopause and to treat estrogen-sensitive breast cancer.
Fill in the blank: The surgical removal of a herniated intervertebral disk is called _______.
diskectomy
Fill in the blank: The process of drawing or pulling in medical treatment is known as _______.
traction
True or False: Orthopedics deals exclusively with muscle disorders.
False
Orthopedics also includes the study of skeleton and associated structures.
