1
Q
Multi store model of memory intro
A
- Atkinson and Shiffrin
- structural model
- suggests memory consists of 3 stores, all linked by processing
- differ in terms of coding, capacity and duration
2
Q
Sensory register
A
- information first comes in through senses
coding - different sensory stores for unprocessed info - limited duration
- very large capacity
3
Q
short term memory
A
- mainly acoustic coding
- 18-30s duration
- capacity 7+/-2
- can be increased by chunking
4
Q
long term memory
A
coding - mainly semantic
duration - up to a lifetime
- unlimited capacity
5
Q
information pathway
A
- info passed linear way
1. external stimuli registered in SR
2. if given enough attention, info to STM
3. if rehearsed enough, info to LTM - info can be lost from STM by decay and displacement
- info can be lost from LTM by decay and interference
6
Q
+
A
- is testable, able to distinguish memory stores
- KF case study
- brain injury from motorcycle accident, STM affected but LTM still in tact
- supports idea of separate stores
7
Q
—-con
A
- more plausible theories e.g. WMM (Tulving)
- explains LTM can be split into episodic, procedural and semantic memory, where MSM sees LTM as unitary
