- Shaffer and Emerson 1964
- involved analysing infant’s protests towards mother
- researcher assessed separation anxiety and stranger anxiety

Stage 1
A
- pre attachment
- 0-2 months
- similar behaviour towards humans and inanimate objects
- towards end of period, babies start smiling suggesting more attracted to humans

A
- indiscriminate stage
- 2-7 months
- babies recognise familiar faces through smiling
- allows strangers to look after them

- discriminate stage
- 7/8 months+
- develop specific attachments (closest to primary one)

- multiple attachments
- 9 months +
- infant becomes attached to consistent relationships e.g. grandparents
- primary attachment remains strongest
- referred to as “secondary attachments”
