Muscle metabolism Flashcards
(13 cards)
how is O2 provided to muscles (2)
- aerial blood flow with good vasculature
2. skeletal myoglobin
name the 3 mechanism of ATP (synthesis)
- creatine cycle
- aerobic metabolism
- anaerobic oxygen
how does creatine cycle work
intramuscular creatine acts as transfer molecule for picking up the P from ATP hydrolysis and giving back P to ADP when making ATP
what happens during aerobic metabolism
occurs in the mitochrondria. fatty acid oxidation, TCA cycle and krebs cycle
when does aerobic metabolism occur
as long as there are nutrients and oxygen
when does anaerobic oxygen occur
only when there is no oxygen but glucose available
what is the oxygen debt
taking in extra O2 to replenish 02 reserve in myoglobin and lungs/blood, oxidize lactic acid, replenish depleted ATP and phosphocreatine
what is muscle tone
a state tension in resting muscle due to weak involuntary contractions of its motor unit
what regulates muscle tone
regulated by the brain and spinal reflexes
fn of muscle tone
keep muscle firm, but does not produce contractions that cause movement
fn of motor nerve
transmit nerve impulses (neuromuscular junction) to muscle cells to cause contraction
fn of a single motor nerve
stimulates a number of muscle fibres. forming motor unit
what determines strength of muscle contraction
number of motor units activated
