Musculoskeletal System Flashcards
(37 cards)
Muscle
Muscles are elastic fibers that contract to generate force, which tendons then transmit to bones, enabling movement at the joints
Involuntary Muscles
Muscles that work without choosing to use them (without thinking)
Voluntary muscles
Muscles that you need to choose to use them. They are connected to bones.
Exoskeleton
Skeleton or shell that is outside the body
What are tendons and how do they work
Attach Muscle to bone and move bone by acting as “cables” that transmit the pulling force from muscles to bones
The skeleton does wat?
Provides a structure for muscles to attach to; provides support; forms a frame that gives your body its basic shape; Protects vital organs such as brain (skull) and heart (rib cage)
The cranium is the
Skull
The lower jaw is also known as the
Mandible
The collarbone is also called the
Clavicle
The breastbone is also called the
sternum
The spine is also called
Vertebrae
The thighbone is also called
Femur
Kneecap is also called
Patella
Shinbone is also called
Tibia
Structure of a LONG bone
Outside is a layer of COMPACT BONE that covers an interior SPONGY TISSUE containing BONE MARROW
what is a compact bone and how does it get it’s strength
Hard shell of a bone that gets strength from its minerals
Bone marrow
substance inside spongy tissue that makes blood cells
what non long bones are made of
Spongy bone
Spongy bone
Bone tissue with a structure less dense than compact bone
Bones need two minerals
Phosphorus and Calcium
Cartilage
A soft, flexible substance that lines or connects bone joints (ears and nose tips shaped by it) and some of it changes into bone
Ossification
Hardening of bones
Ligaments
Connect bone to bone; kind of fibre
Synovial fluid
Liquid inside the cavity surrounding a joint. Helps bones slide freely over each other
