Flashcards in Nasal Cavity and Paranasal Sinuses Deck (18):
1

opening of nose

anterior nasal aperture

2

nostrils (nares) created by

alar cartilage

3

opening to nasopharynx

posterior nasal aperture aka choanae

4

roof of each nasal cavity

cribiform plate of ethmoid
body of sphenoid

5

lateral wall of each nasal cavity

vestibule
atrium of middle meatus

6

middle and superior concha are part of what bone?

ethmoid (inferior concha is its own bone)

7

inferior meatus location and contents

below the inferior nasal concha
receives the opening of the nasolacrimal duct

8

middle meatus contents

bulla ethmoidalis
hiatus semilunaris
infundibulum
openings from:
-frontal sinus
-anterior ethmoid sinus
-maxillary sinus
-middle ethmoidal sinus

9

superior meatus contents

opening of posterior ethmoid sinus

10

sphenoethmoidal recess

above superior nasal conchae
contains opening of sphenoidal sinus

11

where does olfactory nerve enter nose

holes in cribiform plate of ethmoid

12

posterior 2/3 of nasal septum made up of

vomer (bottom)
perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone (top)

13

anterior 1/3 of nasal septum made up of

hyaline cartilage

14

functions of paranasal air sinuses

add resonance to voice
make skull lighter allowing enlargement of local areas
contouring of the head

15

important points about maxillary sinus

largest sinus
teeth may prodrude into here
innervated by maxillary division of trigeminal N
toothache may be perceived as sinus infection or vice versa
opens into middle meatus of nasal cavity

16

important points about frontal sinus

varies in size and may not even be present
innervated by supraorbital N
opens into middle meatus of nasal cavity

17

sphenoidal sinus

in body of sphenoid bone
innervated by branches of maxillary division of trigeminal N and by posterior ethmoidal branch of nasociliary N
opens into sphenoethmoidal recess
-used as surgical approach to pituitary gland

18

Ethmoidal Sinus

made up of several small air cells
posterior ethmoidal air cells open into superior nasal meatus
middle and anterior ethmoidal air cells open into middle meatus
infections in here can go through orbital plate to affect eye
