Natinalists On Society Flashcards
(4 cards)
To a fundamental extent Anti-colonial and expansionist nationalist disagree on society’s right for self determination
Ghandi= society should be able to determine their own destiny and not succumb to imperial powers. This lead to him helping India gain their independence from brisih ruling in 1947, where indi was able to seek statehood and not be constrained by a broad overarchingimperial power.
Links to core pillar of self determination= the belief that nations should decide how they are governed.
Howver, expansionist e.g. Maurras believed in chauvinistic nationalism, where 1 race is superior to another which provided a reason for that race to colonise other nations and strip them from their right to self determination.
E.g. the British empire believed its race was most superior and therefore attempted to project its value onto indigenous people. This can also be reflected in the 21st century where international skls adhere to brisith education cirruclum e.g. IGCSEs and a levels
Pan nationalists and expaniosmost agree on society being defied by race
Garvey-pan Africanist, emphasised the importance of race when uniting Africa as he sought to create Africa as a superpower akin to the americas and Europe.
Race= where biological racial distinction was the most important feature when defining one’s identity and society.
This can descend into extreme cases of racism where the state routinely oppresses racial groups it detests e.g. before civil rights movement in USA, African Americans native Americans and other non white groups were discrimated.
Similarly, expansionist= believed that race is importantly as it allows them to colonise other countries
Maurass chauvinists/integral= German race was superior which then spurred him onto colonising other counties to reassert German dominance. This ideology was strongly supported by hitlers belief of ‘Lebensraum’ and Aryan race
Overall, they agree as it allows them to unite and take over other countries as they sought to replicate a ‘superpower’.
Conservatives and liberal nationalists disagree w society being shaped by culture
Cons- reflect a regressive society thru their emphasis on cultural traditions, social order and national sovereignty, which is often rooted in nostalgia for that nations past.
Herder, believed in exclusive nationalism, where citizenship requires a commmon culture known as volkgeist, a force that unites people by share culture. Tradition and a rose tinted nostalgia r vital e.g. UK celebrating Remebrance Day
Links to culture- shared 4th city, religion and lang
Howver, liberal = progressive society
Rousseau= civic nationalism, where people r united by the values of the flag, which determines one’s citizenship to a nation
E.g. the USA is a multinational country where people r united under the flag sharing core traditions and values contribuing to the American dream, despite their diverse ethnicity, they have been successful in creating a national consciousness.
Conclusion for society
Don’t agree cuz each strand favours a more progressive or regressive approach to society which could wither entrench disunity or unity within a nation.
