A

Upper (British) and Lower (French) were upset with the Oligarchy families controlling Canada. The family compact was a major oligarchy. Lower Canada wanted to have a say in how revenue was spent. Upper Canada felt the Oligarchies were unfair and favourited the clergy/Church of England

What happened in 1840?

A

The Act of Union. It was the merging of both Upper and Lower Canada. The Crown now had rule over all of Canada. This act also meant that the Assembly must consist of representatives of BOTH provinces equally. Began the drive for ‘representation by population’

A

They pushed for pluralism in Canada, and for reform to the government which at this point exclusively consisted of the Crown. They also pushed for French to be recognized and spoken in the assmebly.
