When did the Enlightenment occur?
1685-1815
What did J.J. Rousseau say?
If the government does not act in the best interest of the people it governs, then they should be able to pick a new government
What did Thomas Hobbes say?
Man is inherently evil, so we need a heavy government to keep the people in check
What did Voltaire say?
He believed in a seperation of Church and State
What did John Locke say?
The government needs to protect the three essential rights of people, those being Life, Liberty, and Property
What did Montesquieu say?
That government should be split up into Executive, Legislative, and Judicial government
What did Adam Smith say?
He said that if the government promotes Individualism and Competition, Prosperity will rise
What is Humanism?
Raising the position of mankind. The beliefs stress the importance of the goodness of human beings, emphasize human needs, and seek rational ways of solving human problems
What is Rationalism?
The ability to think rationally and scientifically.
What is empiricism?
The scientific method yields true knowledge
What is individualism?
Individuals and their rights
What is relativism?
Others have equal merit
