What are the seven factors that may create a nation?

How can you define a nation?
A grouping of people who may have similar traits such as Ethnic group, language, geography, political beliefs
How can a Nation-State be defined?
The physical land a Nation may inhibit. WIth boundaries, which is recognized by other Nation-states, with a government
How can Nationalism be defined?
A collective sense of belonging to a grouping of people due to having similar values
Nation-State Vs. Nation
A Nation-state is a concrete concept. It is a territory with strict boundaries that is recognized by other countries. A Nation is a group of people who follow similar ideals and work towards a general goal. This can be many Nation-States
Why is a Nation-State more precise of a definitiion than country?
A country does not need to have a predominant ethnic group, while a Nation-state does. They may not all share similar ideals or have a common culture, while a nation will
What may inspire feelings of belonging to a Nation?
Slogans, Symbols, Songs, Food, Dance, Comercials
What is Individual Identity?
Individual Identity is the identity of a singular person. Participiation in a nation can mold your individual Identity.
What is National Identity?
The collective feeling a Nation has that gives rise to the awareness of a difference between your Nation and others
How does Language act as a factor for Nationalism?
It provides us with the ability to articulate how we feel and think. Different languages can portray different feelings and themes. For example, Japanese has a much larger vocabulary to refer to people with different titles, dependent on their ‘rank’ in respect to your own. English doesn’t do this as much as the Japanese Language does
How does Ehtnicity affect Nationalism?
Ehtnicity is defined by ‘people who identify themselves based off of common historical and cultural experience’. This differed from culture, because culture does not include history. A nation may relate to each other more heavily if they have the same Ethnicity. Think of the Irish, who use their identity as a main way to differ them from other nations such as Britain
How does Culture affect Nationalism?
Culture is the shared traditions and values between a group of people. This heavily Influences Nationalism, as those that have similar traditions and values will likely have other similar values. Storytelling and Myths are used to orally pass down Cultural beliefs and values
How does Geography affect nationalism?
Geography affects who you are around, and in what proximity. For example, Japan is an isolated island, so this allowed for their culture and values to develop very isolated and unify their people. Even manmade borders, such as those between Canada and America differ Nations from one another.
What is citzenship?
The membership and particpiation of people in a poltical community
What is Patriotism?
Love for your nation and it’s accomplishments
How might Patriotism affect nationalism?
Through Patriotism, we may begin to define our Nation by the differences between us and other Nations. An ‘Us vs. Them’ mentality may form
Why express your Nationalism?
TO feel a stronger sense of belonging between you and the people in your nation. A stronger sense of unity between individuals can cause the strength of a Nation to increase
What is Civic Identity?
The responsibility upon citizens to their community or collective. Every citizen should do their part in their nation
What is Civic Nationalism?
The form of Nationalism that is focused on the adoption of shared traits between individuals to make the nation a better place
What is Cultural Nationalism?
A form of Nationalism focusing on the cultural aspects that the individuals in a Nation share. It is what makes their nation unique. This tends to go hand in hand with Cultural Protectionism
