Define a Natural Hazard

A

disasters that negatively impact a country and destroy surroundings that are naturally occuring and can cause damage/destruction/injury/loss of life

3 Types of Natural Hazards

A

1- Geological (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides)- Hazards caused by the Earth’s internal energy
2- Atmospheric (tornados,hurricanes,blizzards,wildfires)- Hazards caused by changes in the Earth’s atmosphere
3- Hydrological (tsunamis, flash floods, thunderstorms)- Hazards caused by the movement and distribution of water

What increases your chance of being in a hazard?

A

1-Poverty- you are forced to live where others won’t e.g. steep slopes like the Fuvella in Sao Paulo
2-Urbanisation- many of the world’s largest cities are in high risk areas e.g. Tokyo, Japan
3-Farming-some areas of framland are at high risk e.g. the Ganges Delta, Bangladesh which is very prone to floods.
