Natural resources Flashcards
(19 cards)
What are the 4 types of spheres
Atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere
What is the lithosphere
It is the solid, rocky, in the upper area part of the crust layer of where we live
What does the lithosphere have
All the rocks and soil and oil and things like that that we need and we use
What is the atmosphere
It is what we use to breathe. It controls our weather systems
What is the biosphere
It is the nature and where living things live layer of the earth. It gives us trees, animals, rainforests.
What is the hydrosphere
It is the water layer of the earth and the fish in it.
What are renewable resources
They are resources that can be used again and again and again. It can’t run out. E.g. sunlight, wind, water
What is non-renewable resources
Resources that will run out eventually. E.g. oil or coal
Why did geoligists create a geological timescale
To order the history of the earth. How it evolved
How did geoligists make the geological timescale
They divided it into big blocks then divided it into smaller ones and then even smaller and so on to get more and more specific. Geoligists use the same one all around the world to study so that they can compare stuff like rocks.
What are some features of sedimentary rock
- soft
- under the sea
- the dead fish has pressure from the water to make rocks
- it has layers
what are the three types of rock
sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous
what are some features of igneous rock
- formed by molten rock
- hard rock
- when molten rock cools, crystals form
what are some features of metamorphic rock
- it changes from a rock with heat pressure to a metamorphic rock
- hard rock
Where are rainforests found
Between tropic of cancer and Tropic of Capricorn
Why are rainforests so special
They are 70 million years old, they regulate the climate, make 40% of air
What is the climate in rainforests
Over 10 million millimetres of rain per year
How do humans use the rainforest
Medication, LOTS of food
What are the environmental problems in the rainforests
deforestation because it has lots of things we want. E.g. minerals, palm oil (we use this ALOT), soy beans
