Rivers Flashcards
(13 cards)
What are the 4 types of erosion
Hydraulic action, attrition, abrasion, solution
What is hydraulic action
River banks have cracks and water gets in them. Air inside the cracks compress and it expands. Erosion happens and rocks break off.
What is attrition
Two rocks smash together with force. The rocks break down into smaller and smoother rocks.
What is abrasion
Rocks carried by the river scrape along the river bank eroding them through sandpaper affect.
What is solution
River water have chemicals and is acidic meaning rocks can dissolve into the water
What is the 4 types of transportation
Traction, suspension, saltation and solution
What is traction
Big stones roll along the river because of the flow of the river but are to heavy to float
What is saltation
Smaller rocks bounce on the river floor .
What is suspension
Sediment size rocks is carried through the water. The float because they are so light
How is a meander formed
Deposition on the inside bend occurs while erosion happens on the outside of the bend making the river curve
What is the deposition area called
The river beach
Where does the river flow faster and where slower in a meander
It flows slower on the inside of the bend and faster on the outside
How does an oxbow lake form
- the river starts to deposit and erode making it curve
- on the outside channels they get closer to each other with eroding and the other side of the river is depositing making the river move and two bends come together
- as the two bends come together, the neck of the meander is begining to disconnectfrom the main river
- as it starts to disconnect the main river chooses the easier root to go through leaving behind the oxbow lake
